ISO Certification — Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions we get asked every single week by Indian business owners considering ISO certification. Short, honest answers — no consultant-speak. If your question isn't here, just call +91-94576-32252 and we'll answer it in 2 minutes.

What is ISO certification?
ISO certification is a third-party attestation that an organisation's management system conforms to specific ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards. The certification is issued by accredited certification bodies and demonstrates that your organisation meets international best practices in areas like quality (ISO 9001), environment (ISO 14001), information security (ISO 27001), occupational health & safety (ISO 45001), food safety (ISO 22000), and more. ISO certification is recognised in over 160 countries worldwide and is increasingly mandatory for government tenders, exports, and B2B contracts in India.
How much does ISO certification cost in India?
ISO certification cost depends on several factors — company size, number of locations, scope of certification and the chosen standard. ISOCert Global provides transparent, all-inclusive pricing with no hidden charges. Call +91-94576-32252 or fill the contact form for a free customised quote tailored to your business.
How long does ISO certification take?
With ISOCert Global's fast-track process, ISO certification can be completed in 7-15 working days for small to medium businesses (1-50 employees). Larger organisations or complex standards like ISO 27001 and ISO 13485 may require 15-30 working days. The timeframe depends on: (1) readiness of your existing documentation, (2) company size and complexity, (3) chosen certification body's audit schedule, and (4) ISO standard requirements.
Is ISO certification mandatory in India?
ISO certification itself is voluntary in India. However, it is mandatory for: (1) Government tender participation — most CPWD, Indian Railways, defence PSU, and municipal corporation tenders require ISO 9001; (2) GeM portal seller registration; (3) Export to regulated markets — EU, USA, Middle East require specific certifications; (4) Pharmaceutical manufacturing — WHO-GMP under Schedule M; (5) Food business — FSSAI licence is mandatory, ISO 22000 is voluntary but often required by buyers; (6) IT companies serving global clients — ISO 27001 is increasingly mandated.
What is IAF accreditation and why is it important?
IAF (International Accreditation Forum) accreditation is the gold standard for ISO certification. An IAF-accredited certificate is issued by a certification body that has been accredited by an IAF member body (in India, this is NABCB — National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies). IAF accreditation ensures: (1) International recognition in 80+ countries through IAF MLA; (2) Acceptance for Indian government tenders — non-IAF certificates are typically rejected; (3) Higher credibility with international buyers; (4) Compliance with ISO/IEC 17021 conformity assessment requirements. Always insist on IAF-accredited certification — non-IAF certificates are cheaper but have limited acceptance.
What is the difference between IAF and non-IAF certification?
IAF (International Accreditation Forum) certification is accredited by an IAF member body (NABCB in India) and is internationally recognised. Non-IAF certification is issued by unaccredited or self-accredited bodies and is NOT internationally recognised. Key differences: (1) IAF certificates cost 30-50% more but are accepted for government tenders, exports, and major contracts; non-IAF certificates are cheaper but widely rejected. (2) IAF audits are more rigorous and follow ISO/IEC 17021 standards; non-IAF audits may be superficial. (3) IAF certificates are listed on IAF MLA registry and verifiable globally; non-IAF certificates have no such registry. Always choose IAF-accredited certification for genuine business value.
Which ISO certification is best for my business?
The right ISO certification depends on your industry and business goals. Common recommendations: Manufacturing → ISO 9001 (Quality) + ISO 14001 (Environment) + ISO 45001 (Safety); IT/Software → ISO 27001 (InfoSec) + ISO 9001 (Quality); Food Business → ISO 22000 + HACCP + FSSAI; Pharmaceutical → WHO-GMP + ISO 13485 (if medical devices); Construction → ISO 9001 + ISO 45001; Healthcare → ISO 9001 + ISO 15189 (labs); Educational Institutions → ISO 9001; Exporters → CE Marking + ISO 9001. Contact ISOCert Global for a free consultation to identify the right certifications for your business.
How long is an ISO certificate valid?
An ISO certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. During this period, annual surveillance audits are conducted by the certification body (typically 1-day audits) to verify ongoing compliance. After 3 years, a recertification audit (similar to initial certification) is required to renew the certificate for another 3-year cycle. ISOCert Global provides complete surveillance audit support throughout the 3-year cycle at no additional cost to clients who certified through us.
